Spirit of the Great Northern Forest
#2 - My Bones Remember

After sitting for five hours in the forest on a steep bank
above the salmon pool and seeing no white bears, we're back on board the sail boat preparing to motor to a safer anchorage for the night. As we struggle to get out of our rain gear, I hear our skipper yell from his bridge: "White bear, white bear, white bear on
beach."

I think this is a cruel joke after waiting five hours. . .But no-he's cut the engine.
Someone else begins yelling, " Oh my God, oh my god."

And then. . .then I see it. A big one-a really big one ambling along the pebbly beach right near where we ourselves had emerged from the forest not long before. Like a lightning bolt, its bearness clarifies my bones. . .I laugh, I cry, I jump up and down with jubilation beyond words, beyond control. I don't understand the depth of my response. It
simply is
and I fall in love with wonder.
